Transaction groups

A group bundles a handful of related transactions under one name and shows you what they add up to. It answers questions like “how much did that actually cost me?” when the answer is spread over several payments.

Say your doctor puts you on a treatment plan. Over the next few weeks you buy the drugs in four trips to two different pharmacies. Each purchase lands in your list as a separate expense, mixed in with everything else you bought at the pharmacy that month.

To see what the treatment cost you in drugs, select those four purchases and group them as “Treatment plan: drugs”. The group shows the total right away.

You could get the same number with a tag or a category, but for a one-off question that’s more than you need:

  • A category changes how the purchases count in your stats. The drugs are still pharmacy spending, and you probably want them to stay that way.
  • A tag is meant to be reused. One made for a single treatment clutters your tag list and every tag picker from then on.
  • A group changes nothing. The transactions keep their category, tags and amounts, and your stats stay exactly as they were. The group only collects them and adds them up.

Other things groups are good for:

  • The costs of a trip or an event, spread over several accounts.
  • A purchase you paid in instalments.
  • A salary and the transfer you made from it right after.
  • An expense and the money a friend or your insurer paid you back for it. The group’s Net shows what you actually paid in the end.
  1. Go to Transactions → All Transactions and select the transactions you want to group. Use filters to find them, for example a note search or a payee.
  2. Click Group → Create new group.
  3. Enter a Name and, if you like, a Note (optional).
  4. Click Create Group.

To add more transactions later, select them and click Group → Add to existing group, pick the group (use Search groups… if you have many) and click Add to Group.

Open a group to see its summary: how many Transactions it holds and the Net, meaning money in minus money out. If the group has both income and expenses, you also see Money in and Money out separately.

Amounts are added up in your base currency, so a group can mix accounts in different currencies.

You can open a group from two places:

  • Transactions → Groups in the sidebar lists all your groups with their transaction count and date range. Use Search groups… to find one by name or note.
  • In the list view of All Transactions, a group shows as a single row with its name, transaction count and date range. Click it to open the group. When a filter other than the date is active, the row expands into its transactions instead.

In the open group:

  • To rename it or change its note, click the three-dot menu next to the name and choose Edit.
  • To take a transaction out, click the × next to it. A group needs at least 2 transactions, so removing one from a group of two deletes the group (the button then reads Remove & Delete Group).
  • To delete the group, click the three-dot menu and choose Delete Group. You can also delete it with the bin button on the Groups page.

Deleting a group, or removing a transaction from it, never deletes the transactions themselves.

  • A group holds 2 to 50 transactions.
  • A transaction can be in only one group at a time.
